Natural and Organic Cosmetics
We see misleading advertising in cosmetics everyday…
Natural represents an alternative to conventional cosmetic products, in which semi-synthetic and synthetic ingredients typically prevail. According to guidelines of the Council of Europe, cosmetic products are deemed natural if they contain natural ingredients of plant, mineral or animal origin, and are obtained solely through physical, microbiological and enzymatic methods (with the exception of some perfuming ingredients & preservatives).
Organic cosmetics take the aforementioned concept a step further. Manufacturers define organic cosmetics as products prepared in a process in which all phases, from growing of plants to the production of cosmetic ingredients, are entirely natural, without use of synthetic compounds, e.g. pesticides and artificial fertilizers in the process of plant cultivation, or ionizing radiation.
An individual cosmetic ingredient is therefore easily defined as natural or organic, while it is much harder to define a cosmetic product as such, particularly if one is aware of the complex composition of modern cosmetic products and the large number of ingredients they contain.
Let’s take a look at two disputable statements:
100% natural cosmetics made of organic ingredients
No preservatives
We should not trust such descriptions. We should be aware that most certificates permit a maximum synthetic compound content of 5%. Preservative-free is also a widely used advertising ploy. We should, however, remember that the aforementioned statement primarily refers to parabens. Preservatives such as benzoic acid and sorbic acid are permitted in natural cosmetics.
You will, however, experience small batch of freshly made, organic products that are preservative-free with Ridings & Co’s products. Our ingredient lists are small, 100% organic in origin of plant or mineral content. We will in time become a ICEA COSMOS ORGANIC certified brand and company.
COSMOS ORGANIC: The percentage of organic ingredients must be indicated by weight in the total product. Organic ingredients and those made from organic raw materials must be indicated on the INCI list.
We care about the ingredients and products that are being used on your hair, skin and body!
